Hummingbirds Sighted in San Antonio

They're here! There have been multiple sightings in San Antonio of hummingbirds. Our friends are here. Hope you have set out your feeders if not check your yard and bring in your old feeders, give them a good wash and fill them with fresh nectar. The preparation is quite simple just 1 part pure cane sugar to 4 parts water, no artificial color is needed.

Monarchs Arrive in Texas

The Monarch butterfly has left their wintering grounds in Mexico and are arrving in Texas. If you do not have milkweek do what you can to get some and set them out in your garden. They will need host plants for the next generation and will also need lots of flowers for nectar. We hope this will help. Other plants your garden should have are curled parsley for the black swallowtail and passion vines for the gulf fritirlary.

Are you prepared with clean feeders. It is time to check your yard for old feeders that need to be brought in to be cleaned and resupplied. We had a tough winter that killed a lot of our flowering plants the feeders will be a life-saver for our migrating friends.

Please note that Hummingbirds and bees can interact. They work arround each other to access the feeder. I would recommend caution especially if you are allergic to bee stings. Otherwise, as long as your movements are slow you should be able to get close without being stung.

One of our readers correctly identified the plant shown on the picture of the posting for Feb 3rd. The plant is the Mexican Flame Vine. This plant is common in South Texas and is a host for the yet unidentified butterfly or moth. We are still looking for the ID of this lovely caterpillar. GULF FRITILLARY IN ACTION

This lovely butterfly can be found from Argentina through Central America, Mexico, and the West Indies to the southern United States, also the San Francisco Bay area on the west coast. It is bright orange with large silvery spots on the underside of the wings.

The Gulf Frilillary lays its eggs on Passion Vines. On the previous post you were able to see the caterpillar form of this butterfly.

The hummingbirds co-exist with the honey bee. They have accessed the same sources of nectar all their existence. They do have to work around each other, but the honey bee does not attack the hummingbird. At times the bees do overwhelm the feeder. When that happens, we give the feeder a quick wipe and move it's address ( We move it to another part of the garden).

We have had a lovely time watching the butterflies that visit the garden as well. Enjoy!

Hummingbirds are creatures of habit. Once you see where one that frequents your feeders perches you can set up to photograph it at that same location. Your friend will most likely return to that same perch frequently.

Just a reminder to keep your feeders clean. Moldy feeders are unhealthy for your hummers.

A Few Minutes in the Garden

Spending a few minutes in my sister's butterfly garden allowed me to video some of the hummingbirds that visit. She places sun flower seeds on the stump in the middle of the garden for a pair of Cardinals also.

Butterflies, hummingbirds, cardinals, and at night the solar lights attract bugs that in turn attract toads. A busy little garden.

STRIKE A POSE

When photographing your hummers, you will find that they are quick and that your automatic focus can not keep up. It is then that you will find the construction of a perch very handy. These mini feeders come with a red plastic covered wire that you can use to hang your feeder or bend it to construct a perch for your hummers to land on. Your hummers do not have to land to feed. This is for your benefit more than their's.

Having a perch will allow you to set your camera to manual focus and pre-focus to the perch area. Then just wait for your hummer to land and snap away to your heart's content.

Butterfly Garden Success

My sister's butterfly garden is a great success. Not only have the butterflies visited, but she has had a lot of hummingbirds visit as well. Her milkweed plants have arrived and she has prepared them in pots which she intends to roll into her patio when the caterpillars are ready to change to butterflies.

My sister's butterfly garden is looking great. Logs with interesting shapes in different locations, some with natural wells used to place seed for the birds, create excitement. Plants expected to grow tall are planted in the rear to create elevation. Her milk weed plants have not yet arrived. She is planning on placing them in large pots she can move into her patio when the caterpillars are ready to transform. This close-up is from behind and to the right of the feeder with the sun to the left of the feeder. Since it was a sunny afternoon I was able to push the shutter to 800th of a second to pause those fast wing beats. This brings another point for those of you setting up to photograph your hummers. If you are not able to adjust your shutter speed on your camera, the building of a perch is handy. This will allow you to photograph the hummers that decide to perch and feed, especially since the use of a flash will startle them.

Hand Feeding & Photography

Once your hummers get used to your feeders you will be able to hand feed them. The best thing to do is to find a position that is comfortable for you. Also, if you will have someone else there to photograph your success, they should find a comfortable position. Naturally you will have to keep your movements smooth to keep from startling your hummers. Since the use of a flash will startle them you might want to consider laying a piece of foil paper on you lap to reflect light on to your subject. Your photographer should not try to follow the subject with the camera, but instead pre-focus on the general area of the feeder as the subject will come to that spot. Have fun!

Diana in San Antonio has placed her four feeders grouped together about 2 feet apart. This allows the hummers and bees to alternate from one feeder to one of the others. If the bees are busy on one feeder the hummers go the next.

We have hung these mini hummingbird feeders practically everywhere. As you can see from this picture this one is on a hanging pot with a morning glory plant on our patio. There are a lot of visitors to this feeder and the two pictures from our previous posting were taken at this feeder.

Do not be concerned too much if bees are attracted to your feeders. Our bees are suffering a decline so we are glad to see them access nectar along with the hummingbirds. If you are allergic to bee stings then keep your distance. Be safe.

Ant Problem 2.0

It's early in the year and many of us still do not have an ant problem but we usually do later in the season. So here is some advise shared with us.

One of our friends had the following suggestion. It appears that ants will eat corn meal set out near your feeders. The corn meal expands inside the ant and... no more ants where the feeders are. If you have other advise we would love to hear about it.

Why are these the right sized feeders?

The above photo shows the size of most hummingbirds. They are small.

These mini hummingbird feeders contain just the right amount of nectar so they can finish it before it goes stale and moldy. Even if you inadvertently leave a feeder out a long time and it gets moldy it will not have moldy nectar as it will be empty, thus no hummers will be harmed.

We have seen a few battles for territory already at the feeders. The beautiful Ruby Throated male can be very aggressive. We don't worry since we set out numerous feeders all around our property. Boys will be boys and the girls are nothing to laugh at, they too are very territorial. Check out this video taken Easter Sunday. What a beauty!

First Day of Spring

It's the first day of Spring and the birds are singing. We have weathered some very strong winds from both the South and then from the North. Keeping up with the weather in the country we see others are still embattled with foul weather. We hope things will soon improve.

Our hummingbirds are back from wintering in Mexico. There are just a few, but we know that soon they will venture further north. With all the concerns with the economy and the weather we must not forget to provide for our friends. It is time to check our supplies of feeders. Make sure they are clean and in good repair. Wish you the best.

We still have hummingbirds in South Texas in December. We also set out seeds for other birds and are delighted to see Titmice visit along with sparrows. We got a glimps of a Cardinal but were unable to photograph it. Hope to get another chance. Are you watching for nature around your home?

Red Bird of Paradise Plant

We are excited that our new Bird of Paradise Plants are growing very well. They are only 6 inches tall and very bushy, which is excellent for their 4 month growth. We expect a profusion of flowers this spring, like the full grown one pictured above. Our gift sets contain 4 mini hummingbird feeders and at least 6 Bird of Paradise Plant seeds as well as at least 6 Yellow Trumpet Flower Plant seeds. We will continue to offer our gift sets through this holliday season and expect to continue to offer the sets in the future.

It is always a joy to have our hummer friends still visiting. After the fog cleared the light was just right. I took a few shots than had to get to work.

Pictured here is the female companion to the stunning Ruby Throated Hummingbird. We get quite a few females on our feeders the males have left to vacation in Mexico.

A Clean Feeder

Our mini hummingbird feeders help our friends stay healthy. Their small size assures that our hummingbirds empty it out before it goes bad. Moldy nectar is not healthy. If you have large feeders please remember to change out the nectar often.

COOL AS A CUCUMBER

This little one has nerves of steel. She is not afraid to sit there cool as a cucumber. Even when another hummer wanted to access the feeder or with my camera about 18 inches away. By the way the other hummer was her mother, so they did not fight.

They get so used to the feeder that I was able to sit my mother down with one and have the hummers feed from her hand. This was a thrill for her since she is partially blind and totally deaf.

Having a Red Bird of Paradise plant comes in handy when trying to attract butterflies for photography. The best thing to do is to grow the plant in a pot large enough to support it's root system. That way you can move the plant to a convenient location for the best lighting.

Texas Butterfly Festival Info

The Texas Butterfly Festival will be held Oct 18-21. There will be seminars and field trips. We will not be able to go to any of the field trips, which run about $30. We plan to attend a seminar by Dale Clark, a butterfly farmer, for about $10 at about 4:30 pm Thursday. We believe a butterfly farmer will know what should be included in our butterfly garden. We look forward to having some fun.

Our Visit to Sleepy Hollow, New York

While in New York City visiting my son we drove to Sleepy Hollow, New York. It was a rainy day but that did not deter us from visiting the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery as it is a beautiful place with wonderful tall trees. We were looking for the fall colors and were not disappointed. We even caught sight of some deer.

We will be attending the Butterfly Festival on the 18th of October and will let you know what we learn about setting up a butterfly garden.

Still in South Texas

We still have hummingbirds in South Texas, though not as many as we had in September. We will not be selling on Ebay in the Fall or Winter but resume in February 2008 in preparation for the Spring Migration of the Hummingbirds.

This video was taken Sept 25, 2007. As you can see the feeder does not drip and it is just the right size to allow for hand feeding when you want and light enough to hang just about anywhere. Can't Help Falling in Love

We just can't help falling in love with these magnificent creatures. They are extremely brave, coming so close to us as we set out or resupply the feeders. This photo was taken by Candace and we are grateful for her permission to share it with our guests to the blog.

Candace in Colorado is still seeing visits to her feeders, not as much as she had in the summer, but still setting out feeders for our migrating friends.

Upcoming Butterfly Festival

We are so excited that it is almost time for the annual Butterfly Festival in Mission Texas. We love both hummingbirds and butterflies. The annual Birding Festival will be held in November in Harlingen, also in Texas.

The picture above shows one of the butterfly species that is attracted to the Red Bird of Paradise plant. This plant also attracts hummingbirds. We will be providing seeds for this plant on Ebay soon. Let us know if you would like some of these seeds. Your comments would be appreciated.
